PHILOSOPHY AS WRITING TEACHERS

We strongly believe that one of the main responsibilities of a writing teacher is to guide students through the academic writing process, helping them create well-structured essays and research papers while finding their voice. We believe in employing formative assessments and individual meetings with students to guide them, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. However, we also highly value the voice that students bring to the classroom when they are given space to review each others’ work and learn how to speak with confidence about both their writing and their engagement with the writing process.

Understanding the importance of communication among students in writing education should be a foundation on which writing teachers can stand. In this way, we believe teachers can create an immersive environment that enables students to apply their learning both in the classroom and in real-life situations.

No second-language class should ignore the fact that students need to engage with all four language skills, and while we understand that most language-focused courses do include all four skills, we also see that writing classes are often the exception, to our great chagrin.

Therefore, we believe that teachers should allow their students to engage in communication and peer feedback activities so that students can grow their confidence in their writing, grow their understanding of the writing process, and ultimately enjoy their writing classes.
